Stephen P. Ward, M.A.

Stephen Ward’s career has included work as a journalist, Capitol Hill press secretary, private sector marketing communications executive, and higher education communications and marketing administrator. As the founding managing editor and anchor of the Michigan Public Radio Network, he helped build a nationally recognized news and programming service and contributed several reports to NPR himself. In Washington he served on the staffs of the late Rep. Paul B. Henry and Fred Upton. He was also vice president for marketing and communications with Huntington National Bank’s northwest region, based in Grand Rapids Michigan.
Ward is currently the Executive Director of University Communications at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Before taking this position, he was a senior administrator at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. Ward was recently honored for his work in higher education IMC. He and his team at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point received the Teresa Du Bois Exline Gold Award for Best Practices in Communications and Marketing from CASE V, the six-state Midwest chapter of the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education. The award recognized the university’s collaborative, strategic communications amid the state budget crisis that propelled Wisconsin into national headlines in early 2011.
Ward has also held marketing and communications leadership posts at Grand Valley State University in Michigan, The University of the South Pacific, based in Fiji, and Georgia Southern University. He is a member of PRSA, CASE, and was a congressional fellow with The American Political Science Association.
Ward has an M.A. in Public Affairs Communications from The American University, in Washington, D.C., and a B.A. in journalism is from Michigan State University.
