Mike Fulton, public affairs & advocacy director at The Asher Agency’s Washington, D.C. office, has more than 30 years of public affairs experience. Before joining The Asher Agency in 2012, he spent more than 22 years at GolinHarris, utilizing his in-depth knowledge of the federal government and broad public affairs skills to achieve successful and high-value government relations results for his clients.
Prior to joining GolinHarris, Fulton worked for two members of the U.S. House of Representatives (Rep. Alan B. Mollohan and the late Rep. Robert H. Mollohan, both of West Virginia) as associate counsel to the House Appropriations Committee, press secretary and special projects assistant. During his Capitol Hill career, Fulton worked with members of United States Congress and federal agencies to solve community, institutional and economic challenges, helping local constituents and government institutions to access federal agencies and programs.
In his 25 years at Asher Agency and at GolinHarris, Fulton utilized Congressional and federal agency meetings, grassroots campaigns, creative events, multi-media, survey research and media relations to enhance advocacy efforts and achieve valuable government relations results for clients. He and his teams have secured more than $3 billion in federal grants and appropriations to clients for meaningful projects and programs. Throughout his agency career, he has led efforts encompassing a broad spectrum of issues on behalf of clients, such as associations, hospital and medical schools, community and technical schools, universities, coalitions, and corporations.
Fulton was named “Top Lobbyist” by The Hill newspaper four years in a row, and his public affairs campaigns have received awards and honors from PR Week, the Thoth Awards and West Virginia’s chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America. Fulton is sought out routinely for quotes and insights by reporters and editors at Politico, The Washington Post, Congressional Quarterly, National Journal, Bloomberg News, Roll Call, The Hill, PRSA Tactics, Chronicle of Higher Education and others. He is an accomplished speaker at clients’ national conventions, commencements, college classrooms, webinars and briefings on government relations and proactive media relations.
Mike is a graduate of West Virginia University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism. He is active in PRSA national and the National Capital Chapter. Mike served on the board of the American League of Lobbyists (now National Institute of Lobbyists and Ethics) and is a regular participant in gatherings of the Grassroots Professional Network. He served six years on the national board of directors of the WVU Alumni Association and was president of the DC-based National Capital Area Chapter in 1986. Mike also served many years on the Visiting Committee of the WVU Reed College of Media.
