Design Director, Pro Shares
WVU IMC graduate
My name is David Hazelton. I’m from Washington, D.C. I work for a company called Pro Shares, which is a premiere provider of ETFs or exchange traded funds. I’m their design director, and as their design director I am responsible for all of the visual aspects of their brand. That covers all channels of their marketing and advertising. I graduated in the spring of 2016.
I wanted a master’s degree because, being in design, I was always exposed peripherally to other aspects of IMC and I really wanted the confidence to speak about those things with some formal education behind it, so I looked at other master’s degrees. I didn’t want an MBA. I didn’t want to go through all the business components of that that I didn’t think that I would use. When I found that IMC existed as a degree, I became very interested in that and then started to look at different schools that offered that and really found that West Virginia had the best curriculum.
The best thing for me was really the meeting people—meeting classmates and meeting the faculty, and I thought with an online program it would be completely anonymous; that I would feel like I was just in the corner by myself working on these assignments and I was really surprised to sort of connect with classmates and feel that the faculty actually knew me and understood my personality. So, really, sort of the connectedness was a surprise for me.
