2012 Alexia Vanides Award Recipients

Matthew Cummings and Karen Freburg

The 2012 Alexia Vanides Online Teaching Award went to two instructors: Karen Freberg of Louisville, KY and Matthew Cummings of Erie, PA.

Freberg is an Assistant Professor at the University of Louisville in Louisville, KY. Along with her teaching experience, Freberg has presented at several U.S. and international research conferences, including conferences in the Netherlands, Greece and China. Freberg completed her Ph.D. at the University of Tennessee. She attended the University of Southern California for her Master’s degree in strategic public relations at the Annenberg School for Communication, and received her bachelor’s degree in public relations at the University of Florida in August 2005.

Freberg teaches IMC 618 - PR Concepts & Strategy.

Cummings is the director of communications for Erie Public Schools, a large urban K-12 school system in northwestern Pennsylvania serving more than 12,000 students. He is the chief communications strategist for the system and serves on the superintendent’s executive leadership team. Prior to joining Erie Public Schools, he served as vice president of Core Creative, director of marketing communications for a regional chamber of commerce, and also has an award-winning background in education PR in the Pittsburgh area. A native of northwest Pennsylvania, Professor Cummings is a graduate of West Virginia University’s IMC program. He earned a bachelor of arts in communications from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania.
